Mental Health Therapist

Promise Community Health Center seeks a full-time Mental Health Therapist (32 hours/week) to join its expanding team.


The Mental Health Therapist will be responsible for overseeing the integrated, team-based behavioral health services at Promise. The Mental Health Therapist will counsel individuals and groups and work with and supervise a bilingual therapy assistant.


Responsibilities of the position will include:

  • Counseling patients in individual or group sessions to assist them in dealing with personal issues, substance abuse, opioid dependency, mental or physical illness, poverty, unemployment or physical abuse.

  • Conducting assessments and training other professionals at Promise CHC to equip them with tools to effectively screen and assess for co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders.

  • Collaborating with counselors, physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and all members of the health-care team to plan and coordinate treatment, drawing on social work experience and the patient’s needs.

  • Referring patients or families to community resources for housing or treatment to assist in recovery from mental or physical illness and addiction disorders.

  • Educating patients or community members about mental or physical illness, abuse, medication, or available community resourcesspecific to opioid dependence, abuse and treatment.

  • Establishing contracts or memorandums of understanding with area treatment facilities in the event that referral or treatment/care is needed for the management of patients with complex or acute behavioral health or substance abuse disorders.

  • Engaging experts in opioid dependency and abuse training for Promise providers and staff to be able to monitor patients with chronic pain, to effectively prescribe and to screen for dependency.

  • Planning and conducting community programs to prevent substance abuse and combat social problems related to the opioid epidemic.

  • Supervising direct workers such as the bilingual therapy assistant who provides direct service to patients receiving therapy services.

  • Documenting care and services in the patient’s health record to reflect service delivery and outcome of service coordination and care to patients receiving integrated behavioral health and substance abuse services.


Qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree in social work is required. Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) licensing is required; Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) is preferred.

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) certification is required, but Promise is willing to provide the necessary training.

  • Bilingual speaking ability in Spanish is a plus.


Applicants may be eligible for student loan repayment through the National Health Services Corps (NHSC). Primary care medical, dental and mental/behavioral health clinicians can receive up to $50,000 to repay their health profession student loans in exchange for a two-year commitment to work at a NHSC site. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Promise is a NHSC-approved loan repayment site.
